Computer performance is characterized by the amount of useful work accomplished by a computer system or computer network compared to the time and resources used. How well is the computer doing the work it is supposed to do.
No matter how rich your computer may be in configuration, it will get slower as the time passes. This process happens so slowly and gradually that even you will not come to know unless one day you come across a software that takes a lot of time to start. At that particular moment, you feel like, Oh my god! what happened to my poor PC! After getting a brand new PC, at the drop of a hat, you install dozens of programs, download unlimited internet junk, load it with an antivirus and so on.
Whatever the reason may be there are many ways to increase computer performance.
In this post, we tell you 13 tips on how to increase the computer performance so that you will be able to cross the bridge when you come to it.
1. Reduce Number of Programs that Run on ‘Start-Up’
When you start your PC, it’s not that only the Windows loads, many programs run along with the Windows. The icons that you see on the far right corner of the taskbar are the programs that get started. In addition, some programs run in the background whenever you start the PC.
This heck of a whole nine yards are the programs that consume the memory and drags the performance of the PC down.
Fortunately, we can control the programs that get started on Startup.
Here’s how it is…
- Open the run command(Windows+r)
- Type msconfig
- Now in System Configuration click on Startup. Uncheck the program you feel that not want on startup…
These programs that are listed here will remain on your computer so don’t worry, it will only disable the programs on start up and will not uninstall the program. After clicking OK you will be asked to restart the computer,
Don’t cut the corner here…
Do exactly what is asked for and then you will see the difference for sure when you restart the PC.
2. Clean the Computer
Windows has an inbuilt de-cluttering tool called “Disk Cleanup”. It looks for the unnecessary large files like temporary internet files, program installers and the like. To open Disk Cleanup, you have to just type disk cleanup in the search bar either ways you can go to Start> Accessories>System tools> Disk Clean Up or just type, cleanmgr.exe in the search bar.
Here is a video that will help you guide on how to clean the laptop that will help you increase the computer performance.
3. Restart Regularly
A simple yet very effective tip. Consider restarting your computer at least once a week. Restarting PC causes all the software running to close. It includes not only the programs you see on the taskbar but also the services that have been started but not yet closed. If you keep many programs, e-mail messages and websites open that you think opening is a hassle, that’s the sign that you should restart a PC. The more programs or services you open and keep running, the more are the chances that the PC will bog down and will cause a problem to increase computer performance.
4. Improve Speed: Run Fewer Programs At the Same Time
Sometimes, changing the computing behavior may also prove an added advantage to increase the computer performance. If you’re a kinda guy who likes to keep up with 5 programs with a dozen of browser windows open at a time then don’t get surprised if your PC bogs down. If you really want to maximize computer performance, then ask yourself a question, “Do I really want to have this much programs running at a time?” Consider having browser windows open that you really need. Find a better way to remind yourself about the task to complete rather than having open all at the same time.
5. Improve Speed: CCleaner
CCleaner (Formerly Crap Cleaner ) as the name goes is a utility program that will clean unwanted files ( temporary internet files, malicious programs) and invalid Windows registry entries from a computer.
6. Increase Computer Performance: Add More RAM
One physical way by which you can increase computer performance is by adding more RAM. You can and should prefer adding more RAM at until the computer’s capacity. I have managed to upgrade RAM for my PC while writing this post and experience a boost in the performance of the PC. RAM is used by computer when tasks are being executed by different programs. So, the more programs you use, the more RAM you need. Else, the computer will get slow.
You can add stick or two, notably there is no upper limit on amount of RAM to upgrade but a 4 GB RAM works pretty well. Laptops are usually more tricky while installing RAM because you have to remove the screws but fairly simple also.
7. Add a Bigger and Faster Disk Drive
Even if you clean your Temporary files regularly and have your Hard Disks full, it may affect your computer’s performance. If you have a habit of collecting Movies or Television recording, consider upgrading your HardDrive to improve computer speed.
8. Scan the Computer for Viruses and Malware
You should regularly scan your computer for viruses and malware. Malware is a term that is used to refer to term a variety of intrusive software which includes, worms, viruses, trojan horses, spyware and so on. You can get an Antivirus and access it to perform manual scan or you can schedule it perform a scan weekly. Having more than one set of Antivirus is not advisable because it will slow down the performance of the PC.
9. How to Increase Computer Performance: Upgrade the OS
It is very much pointless to upgrade an old OS on a new PC or a PC which has been upgraded. Wheather Installing Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 will give you overall speed depends on specification of your hardware. Availability of “drivers” for the motherboard and peripherals can make a difference. Check the manufacture’s list.
10. How to Increase Computer Performance: Disk Fragmentation
Fragmentation allows your hard disk to perform extra work that will eventually slows the performance of the computer. Disk defragmentation helps to consolidated fragmented data on a volume (hard disk or storage device) so that it will perform more effectively. You can run disk defragmenter manually or you can set it for a schedule.
11. Improve Speed: Remove Programs that you Never Use
A brand new computer is loaded with lots of programs that you might never require or you didn’t order. Most of these programs are trial editions and limited-edition software. The intention behind providing these software is that the manufacturer thinks the user will try them and if he finds it useful then pay for the full version or get a upgraded version. Keeping these software can also slow down the performance of the PC. A good idea is to uninstall the manufacturer provided software as well as the software you don’t use. Even if your PC is older, sometimes there happens a case that you might have not noticed these software or have since forgotten about. It’s never too late to remove these software that may prove a clutter to increase computer performance. Perhaps, you might have thought that you might use these software someday but never did. Uninstall these software to improve the computer speed.
12. Adjust Visual Effects
You can change your visual settings to increase the computer performance.
Start > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Performance Information and Tools.
Click Adjust visual effects, if you are asked for an administrator password then type the password.
Click Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance > OK. (For a less drastic option, select Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer.)
To Adjust the Power Options:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sounds > Power Options. Change the plan from balanced to Power Saver.
13. Buy New PC
If applying all these techniques still doesn’t help then it might be the case that Elvis has left the building and now you should consider buying a new PC for yourself.
