Android now has become a familiar name among the people. A lot of people head towards the Google Play Store and search for the android app they want. Sometimes the app is found useful and sometimes a Err..
You have probably heard about developing an Android app is pretty easy.
You need to master some technical skills in order to built an Android app. Thinking of this many people drop the idea of making their own app.
Well, there is a good news then…
We have found an interesting software that will help you develop an Android App and that too WITHOUT CODE.
You heard it right. Now you can develop Android app without coding.
We are going to use something called App Inventer 2.
App Inventer is a joint venture between Google and MIT. The App Inventor 2 is now mostly run by MIT.
In order to find App Inventor 2 just type in Google “App Inventor”.
You will see many links beneath it like Tutorials, Installing App Inventor 2, Setting Up App, Inventor 2 and so on. You have to click Installing App Inventor 2.
What actually it does is, it gives you a page from where you can get the software to download.
This software is for the emulator that you will be using. Click “Download the installer” link. Keep patience as the software will take time to download (nearly 80 MB).
When you scroll down, it will give you a step-by-step instructions on what to do and it also give you the step by step instructions on how to set up the emulator.
Even though I will guide you on how to set up the emulator. I suggest you to have a look on the page, it will give you an overview on how to set up the emulator.
Now after everything is installed, just go back to Google type in App Inventor 2.
Another important thing here is that make sure the link is ai2.appinventor.mit.edu because it is the newest and the greatest version.
Click on the App Inventor.
You will be redirected to the Projects page. If you find any default project, just check mark on the right box for the particular project and click the Delete Project button.
So when you log in and don’t have any projects this is how the screen looks like.
The next thing you have to do is click the Start New Project.
A new window will come that says “Project name”, what you have to do is put in an name that you would actually use when you upload the app on Google Play Store. This is because the name is not changeable.
Now the first app that we are going to develop is of Counter.
Counter to increase or decrease a number. Its very simple!
Next thing is How to Load the Emulator.
How to Load the Emulator- Make Android App Without Coding:
On the center of the page you will find 4 options-
Click “Connect”, you will see 3 options-
1. AI companion– It is an app that you can download from Google Play Store (If you are interested then here it is- MIT AI2 Companion)
2. Emulator-The emulator is basically a phone that is in your computer that we downloaded earlier that you will be able to run.
3. USB– Use to connect to the USB if you wish to.
We will go with the Emulator. Now, just go to Connect > Emulator and you will see that a window appears saying ” Starting the Android Emulator. Please Wait…”
Well, it’s not lying. It will take a minute or two to connect.
The Emulator will also take some time to load so keep patience. After the loading is complete, you will see a screen that looks like an old school Android phones that back when Android became popular with a slide locker.
A lot of time you will get errors to it, this is because it is not one of the most stable things. So just click on Wait.
Now you will see the user interface on the Emulator.
It is not necessary that the UI should look same as that on the dashboard because it depends upon which version of Android is on your phone. When you switch back and forth between the apps, this emulator is supposed to change with you.
Okay, That was about the Emulator.
Now, We will head over the User Interface.
User Interface- Make Android App Without Coding:
The user interface here is all about the drag and drop system. So you can really drag a button over and its really that simple. If you want to delete the button then just head over to Components , select the item (in our case- button) and click Delete.
The Palette contains various items, you can play over it to know each of them because they are quite simple.
In the Viewer section, it is supposed to how your phone look like when you are running the app.
Now, the name of our app is Counter. So make the title name Counter and we do that by going to the Properties > Title. You will see the name changed to Counter.
Now all we gonna do is built an app that has one or two buttons that will make a number go up or down. So in this case, we need two buttons (Rename the button names to btn_Up and btn_Down) and a label.
I want that number to start with zero .
Head over to Components select label. Go to Properties, change the Text to ‘0’.
You can also set the font size as per your convenience.
Coming to the two buttons (btn_Up and btn_Down)- Head over to Properties
and just follow the steps highlighted in the figure below to adjust the button height and width. Make button height 100 pixels and button width to “Fill Parent”.
Making the Counter App Work- Android App Without Coding:
Now let’s dig deep into how the app actually works.
On the right-hand side corner of, you will two buttons –
Hit the Blocks button because we will be working with blocks right now. What we gonna do is make the number ‘0’ go up or down when we hit the respective buttons.
You will get the clear view of how to make the counter work in this video.
